DRUM TO THE BEAT: Child-Based Family Rhythm and Drum Classes
Music Classes designed to joyfully celebrate, expand and deepen family and community connections while supporting music-making and music lessons of all kinds. The instruments will be Djembe (African Drum), Shakers, Bells, Claves and more.
The Classes are open to as many participating parent/family/care-givers as can attend (regularly or occasionally) to encourage family and inter-generational musical enjoyment. More than a music class for children, these sessions will be a “Musical Experience” for the whole family.
LOCATION: St. John’s Church, 36 Park Street Williamstown, MA.
DATES: Saturdays beginning October 18th through December 13th. (excluding November 29)
FEES: $120.00 (block of 8 classes) One fee for each individual family, no matter the number of family participants.
Class I: “RISE UP IN RHYTHM” 9:30-10:30 Kids ages 3.5 - 5.5 years old and family
(fee does not include cost of purchaseing inexpensive instruments, encouraged, but not required.) The focus will be on multi-cultural games, songs and rhythms that foster listening and communication skills.
Class II: “LET’S PLAY THE DRUM!” 11:00-Noon Kids ages 5.5 - 8 years old and family
(fee does not include required purchase of good quality, inexpensive djembe and claves or shakers) The focus will be on rhythm games that foster listening, communication and improvisation and developing skills on the djembe and other percussion instruments while also learning songs and culturally specific group rhythm patterns from Africa and South America.
